Research Area 3: Chemistry in Extreme Environments
Research Area 3 of the Materials Science in Extreme Environments University Research Alliance (MSEE URA) focuses on Chemistry in Extreme Environments.
In Research Area 3, the MSEE URA will investigate the nuclear fireball and the chemical agent defeat environment and associated neutralization strategies
This research is supported by the focus areas outlined below.
- Focus Area 1: Nuclear Fireball Plasma Chemistry – Focuses on mid-phase interactions of the fireball with surroundings, with emphasis on the time scales from initiation to multiple seconds of the fireball evolution, and temperatures of under 1eV.
- Focus Area 2: High Temperature Properties and Chemistry of Agents and Simulants – Efforts center on (1) identifying intermediate and final decomposition products and reaction rates of agents and simulants at high temperatures and fast heating rates, (2) understanding and controlling reaction chemistry for various conditions of counter-weapons-of-mass-destruction operations.
