Title: Investigating the on-set of amorphization in single crystal boron carbide.
It is still unclear what initiates the formation of amorphous bands in boron
carbide. Studies that have looked at the microstructure of these bands have
done so on material that experienced intense, complicated stress states.
This makes it difficult to identify the initial formation of the amorphous
bands. For this work, spherical nanoindentation to different maximum load
levels was performed on single crystal boron carbide to attempt and delay
the formation of amorphous bands. The indents were then analyzed with raman
spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy to observe any
amorphization along with the evolution of the microstructure.
