Jacob Diamond Engr ’25 (PhD), a postdoctoral fellow at the Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute, has been awarded the 2026 Robert J. Eichelberger Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowship by the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL).
The ARL Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowships program recognizes exceptional early-career researchers who have demonstrated excellence in scientific research, leadership, and innovation. This year, just three new fellows were selected from a pool of roughly 500 applicants.
Diamond completed his PhD under the supervision of K.T. Ramesh, the Alonzo G. Decker Jr. Professor of Science and Engineering. At HEMI, Diamond studied the mechanics of materials under shock and impact and contributed to various research projects in the Materials Science in Extreme Environments University Research Alliance (MSEE URA) and the Center on Artificial Intelligence for Materials in Extreme Environments (CAIMEE).
While Diamond looks forward to what he will accomplish at ARL, he credits his time at HEMI with getting him there. “I’m very excited to join ARL and contribute to their long history of outstanding research in terminal effects and shock physics. This is the research I have wanted to do since I began undergrad, and there is nowhere better than ARL for this type of work,” said Diamond. “HEMI has been an amazing place to learn this discipline and collaborate with researchers all over the world. I’m grateful for how much I’ve been able to grow as a scientist at HEMI and for all the support I received during my PhD.”
