Tim Rupert
HEMI Director
Timothy Rupert, professor of materials science and engineering and director of Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute, focuses on nanostructured materials and defect engineering. Rupert specifically works to leverage materials that will enable new structural and energy technologies, increasing the reliability and lifetime of materials by finding new structure-property relationships in advanced nanomaterials. His current research areas include nanocrystalline metals and alloys, thin film materials, and the study of interfaces and defect phases at the atomic level. Using mixtures of computational and experimental techniques, he aims to push materials to be optimized for extreme environments, with goals to strengthen nanostructured materials for applications such as nuclear energy and defense.

Vicky Nguyen
Co-Deputy Director
Thao (Vicky) Nguyen, professor of mechanical engineering, is known for her research on the mechanics of soft engineering and biological materials. Nguyen serves as a deputy director of the Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute.

Ryan Hurley
Co-Deputy Director
Ryan Hurley is an associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and holds secondary appointments in the Departments of Civil and Systems Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering. He currently serves as a deputy director of the Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute and associate program director of the Materials Science in Extreme Environments University Research Alliance (MSEE URA).
Executive Committee
The HEMI Executive Committee (EC) exercises general managerial responsibility over the activities within the Institute, considers major issues and makes recommendations to the Director. The EC will establish policies and procedures consistent with the goals of the HEMI mission. The EC will meet monthly.
