The Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute (HEMI) and the Maryland Institute College of art (MICA) are pleased to announce the Extreme Arts Summer Project/Internship for summer 2026. The goal of the project/internship is to develop creative visual representations of HEMI’s structure, current research, and relationships. We welcome unique and experimental approaches to design and artmaking as participants explore the diverse research of this institute.
About HEMI: HEMI provides global intellectual leadership to advance the fundamental science of materials and structures in extreme environments and demonstrating extreme performance. HEMI researchers bridge disciplines to identify, understand, and solve the problems that occur when materials are pushed to their limits.

- For news and research information, please review our LinkedIn page and news on our website.
- For information about our researchers and the work they do, please refer to the bios of our HEMI Fellows.
We are accepting proposals related to HEMI research. Visual representations can include, but are not limited to: storyboarding and narrative, animation, photography, graphics and graphic design, interactive arts or products, sculptural forms or materials, games, information visualization, illustration, drawing, or painting.
Eligibility
Current MICA undergraduate or graduate students are eligible to apply for this internship. This includes undergraduate seniors as long as the student is enrolled at MICA during the application period. The applicant will also need to identify a MICA faculty member who will serve as the advisor for this summer project/internship.
Expectations
- Students should propose a project that requires various interactions with HEMI students and researchers.
- The project is independently directed and best suited for a self-driven student. HEMI faculty and/or researchers will not provide a project or brief at the outset, but they may provide guidance, insight, and suggestions at the MICA student’s request as the proposed project evolves.
Award
The total award for this summer project/internship is $3,000. $2,000 will be granted to the student as a stipend to cover any supplies or expenses. $1,000 will be granted to the MICA faculty member for their time to support and oversee the development of the project.
