Since 2014, CMEDE has sponsored the MEDE Undergraduate Internship Program (MUIP). Starting the summer of 2017, MUIP will be converted into the Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program (URAP), run by the Army Educational Outreach Program and sponsored by the Army Research Office.
Description of Opportunity:
The URAP experience with the MEDE CRA will focus on expanding the fundamental understanding of four classes of materials: metals, ceramics, composites and polymers. Participants will be involved in one of the following research activities:
- preparing material samples for experiments;
- conducting high-strain rate experiments on materials;
- characterizing materials in high fidelity electronic microscopes;
- analyzing experimental data and results;
- computational modeling of materials under dynamic loading conditions, or
- synthesizing and processing new protection materials.
Requirements:
- Applicants should contact the Collaborative Principal Investigator (PI) by clicking on the ceramics, composites, metals and polymers CMRG links at https://hemi.jhu.edu/cmede-dev/home/research/ and submit a recommendation from the PI agreeing to host the applicant with their application.
- Interested applicants should also have strong academic record with an emphasis in math, science, or engineering.
- Applicants must be a US citizen or legal permanent resident.
Additional details:
- At the end of the URAP experience, participants are required to submit an abstract of their research activity and fill out a survey.
- The undergraduate student will be paid $10/hour for up to 300 hours.
- There is no funding allotted for housing or travel.
- As with MUIP, the URAP selection process will be centralized under CMEDE.
