Topology Optimization for the Design of Manufacturable Architected Materials and Components

Jamie Guest, Dept. of Civil Engineering, Johns Hopkins University

Topology optimization has long been touted as a powerful tool capable of discovering innovative solutions to engineering design problems. It has been used to design ‘structures’ built at a range of length scales, from tens of microns (material architectures) to decameters (structures), for performance properties governed by a variety of physics. Despite its tremendous potential as a design tool, topology optimized solutions are typically suboptimal when considering real-world operating conditions, design objectives, and manufacturing processes, and thus may require significant manual post-processing and re-design to achieve workable solutions.  This talk will discuss the necessary ingredients for formulating and solving topology optimization problems, and discuss our efforts at overcoming barriers to its application in engineering design.  Particular emphasis will be placed on design for manufacturability with an aim towards fully leveraging the capabilities of modern manufacturing methods. Several design examples will be presented including cellular materials, components and devices that are fabricated through additive manufacturing, machining or 3D weaving, and optimized for mechanical, fluidic, and/or thermal properties.

Seminar will be held at 3:30 PM in Malone Hall G 33/35.
