On April 3-4, 2017, the Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute hosted a two-day, invitational workshop focused on magnesium. Leading experts from the United States, Japan, Australia, and Germany traveled to the Homewood campus of Johns Hopkins University to discuss the current state of the art in magnesium experiments, modeling and simulation, processing and design. The workshop was co-chaired by JHU faculty Jaafar El-Awady, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Evan Ma, Professor of Materials Science and Engineering, also included representatives from the Army Research Laboratory due to their specific interest in magnesium as a protection material for military applications. A report which addresses recent developments and current challenges in magnesium research will be published and provided to federal agencies to assist in their strategic program planning.
