HEMI/MICA Extreme Arts Program Semester Artist/Designer in Residence

The Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute (HEMI) and the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) are pleased to announce the Semester Artist/Designer in Residence. The goal of this artist/designer in residence is to bring MICA and JHU faculty together to collaborate and explore ways to represent, visualize, and/or interpret HEMI research. Representations of HEMI research can include, but are not limited to:

  • Responses to research regarding HEMI ‘extreme’ events, collaborations, interdependent systems
  • Interpretation, translation, and/or communication of large amounts of data
  • Creation of experiences that bridge the gap between new audiences and the knowledge created within HEMI
  • Conceptual, textual, ephemeral, and/or visual works that expand the interpretations of HEMI research

The semester in residence is expected to take place in either the fall semester from late August – December 2020 or the spring semester from January – May 2021.

Eligibility

All full-time faculty are eligible to apply for the HEMI/MICA Extreme Arts Residency. Part-time faculty who have taught nine credits per academic year for the past two consecutive years are also eligible to apply.

NOTE: Should the pool of applicants be limited due to the viability of the proposed projects (eg: projects request resources currently not available; a HEMI Fellow is not available to participate), HEMI reserves the right to review the full slate of applications in order to select an Artist/Designer in Residence.

Award

The total budget request for this semester in residence may not exceed $15,000. The semester in residence (and its fee) is based on an assumption that this commitment is part-time and equivalent to one day of work per week for the semester. Budget line items can include, but are not limited to: MICA faculty compensation, materials, supplies, course release/replacement costs, etc. It is expected that all artist/designer work will be performed by the selected MICA faculty member. The final budget is subject to negotiations between MICA and JHU.

Proposal Format

  • Title Page – Include proposal title, faculty name and contact information (email and phone numbers)
  • Curriculum vitae of the faculty member
  • Portfolio of relevant work (include images or link to website)
  • Narrative – Not to exceed three pages. The narrative should address the following:
    • Describe the research or work you intend to pursue as part of this semester in residence.
    • Describe the materials, methods and/or types of representation you intend to use for the exploration.
    • Identify the goals and objectives for the project. What do you hope to achieve?
    • Project Timeline (including deadlines and evaluation)
    • Description of what you anticipate will be the final deliverable(s)
    • Name(s) of the JHU faculty with whom you will be collaborating. For reference, a list of HEMI faculty can be found here.
  • If requesting a course release, please include a signed acknowledgment from your department chair or appropriate supervising associate dean that they have been notified of the potential reduction in your teaching schedule.

Deadline

Extended Deadline – Proposals are due by 5PM on Monday, February 24, 2020. Please email the proposal as a single PDF document to Tracy Marshall at [email protected]. Questions may be addressed to Tracy as well.

Evaluation Process

Representatives from each academic institution (JHU-HEMI and MICA) serve on the Extreme Arts Program Steering Committee that guides the overall program and forms the selection committee for the participating artists. In addition, a recognized artist with connection to the community and art & science inquiry is also invited to serve on the selection committee for the residency.

Documentation & Reporting

The selected artist or designer in residence should be willing to work with a videographer to create a video that documents his/her research and residency experience to share with a public audience via the program website. Additional funds will be provided for this documentation. In addition, participants are expected to provide one or more presentations about the work and residency to local audiences, including faculty in each institution and a city school.
