HEMI Fellow Sung Hoon Kang Leads Initiative to Develop 3D-Printed Ventilator Splitters for Use with COVID-19 Patients

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, more and more health care facilities find themselves experiencing a shortage of ventilators to help treat patients. In response to this issue, Professor Sung Hoon Kang (Department of Mechanical Engineering) is leading a team of Johns Hopkins engineers to develop and prototype a 3D-printed splitter that will allow a single ventilator to treat multiple patients.

Although medical professionals have expressed concern over the safety and effectiveness of a multi-use device, Kang assures that the health and care of patients are the team’s priority.

“It must be safe for all the patients,” he says. “That means ensuring that each patient gets the care they need, without shortchanging anyone. This is what we set out to create.”
