HEMI Colloquium: Erica Schoenberger

In the interest of building community and collaboration in HEMI, we are initiating the HEMI Friday Colloquium series. Speakers in this series will be members of the JHU community, both from within and from outside of HEMI. They will occur about once per month, initiating with a social time from 3:00-3:30 with snacks and beverages, followed by a talk from 3:30-4:30, with snacks and beverages continuing. The idea is for this to be much more casual than the typical seminar, with a lot of discussion and interaction.

Researching Interdisciplinary Research: Materials in Extreme Dynamic Environments

Interdisciplinary collaborative research is widely regarded as critical to understanding complex natural and social phenomena. Nevertheless, it remains difficult to know how to foster productive collaborations and how to evaluate them. Here I report on my ongoing research on interdisciplinary collaboration at HEMI/MEDE. The army-funded MEDE project requires collaboration in multiple dimensions: disciplinary, institutional, time scale, length scale, and scientific mode (e.g., theoretical modeling, computational modeling, experiment, etc.). I will share some of the results of my research so far, focusing on how researchers are collaborating with what outcomes, and how they evaluate the collaborative process. I will also show how the work of MEDE relates to important questions about how scientific knowledge is produced.
