Congratulations to HEMI post-doctoral fellow Santiago Orrego for accepting a new position as Assistant Professor within the Department of Restorative Dentistry at Temple University! Once at Temple, he will start a new program for research on smart dental biomaterials, focusing on how to develop functional biomaterials with the ability to adapt, respond and communicate with the external environment. His work will require interdisciplinary collaboration with the Center for Bioengineering.

When asked what excites him about the transition he responded,  “I’m excited to know that all these years of hard work prepared me for this big challenge. I’m thankful to Hopkins for providing me with a great space, training and guidance, which set me in a great starting point for the position. I’m excited to know that I will have the opportunity to contribute, influence and shape the new generation of students and develop biomaterials to improve the health care of humanity.”

Dr. Orrego will continue his research with The Kang Group under the guidance of Prof. Sung Hoon Kang through the end of April. His current work focuses on developing a bone-inspired biomaterials with self-adaptable mechanical properties and self-regeneration capabilities.
