HEMI/MICA EXTREME ARTS SUMMER PROJECT/INTERNSHIP

The Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute (HEMI) and the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) are pleased to announce the Extreme Arts Summer Project/Internship. The goal of the project/internship is to develop creative visual representations of the HEMI organization’s structure, current research, and relationships. We welcome unique and experimental approaches to design and art-making as participants explore the diverse research of this institute.

This year HEMI is accepting proposals for project/internships in the following areas:

  1. Projects related to HEMI research. This covers a broad range of topics from the behavior of granular materials to planetary research, just as an example.

About HEMI: HEMI develops the science and technology that protects people, structures, and the planet.

  1. Projects related to CAIMEE (Center on Artificial Intelligence for Materials in Extreme Environments) research

About CAIMEE: Materials in extreme environments present numerous research challenges, in particular the prevalence of costly and time-consuming experiments and computational models that offer only sparse data for materials design decisions. The Center on Artificial Intelligence for Materials in Extreme Environments (CAIMEE) provides a focus for research activities that overcome these barriers through integrative robotic automation, novel high-throughput experimentation, machine learning (ML)-accelerated computational models and, artificial intelligence (AI)-/data-driven design iterations that will enable developing materials with tailored properties for sustainable performance in extreme environments.

For reference, information about CAIMEE can be found here. JHU faculty with research related to CAIMEE are:  Jaafar El-Awady, Paulette Clancy, David Elbert, Mark Foster, Todd Hufnagel, Axel Krieger, KT Ramesh, Michael Shields, Tim Weihs, Tamer Zaki.

Visual representations can include, but are not limited to: storyboarding and narrative, animation, photography, graphic design and graphics, interactive arts or products, sculptural forms or materials, games, information visualization, illustration, drawing, or painting

HEMI expects the internship to take place between June 1st and August 15th each year.

Eligibility

Current MICA undergraduate or graduate students are eligible to apply for this internship. This includes undergraduate seniors, as long as the student is enrolled at MICA during the application period. The applicant will also need to identify a MICA faculty member who will serve as the advisor for this summer project/internship.

Expectations

  • Students should propose a highly interactive project that requires various interactions with HEMI students/researchers.
  • The project is independently directed, and best suited for a self-driven student. HEMI faculty/researchers will not provide a project/brief at the outset, but they can provide guidance, insight, and suggestions at the MICA student’s request as their proposed project evolves.

Award

The total award for this summer project/internship is $3,000. $2,000 will be granted to the student as a stipend to cover any supplies or expenses. $1,000 will be granted to the MICA faculty member for their time to support and oversee the development of the project.

Proposal Format

  • Title Page – Include proposal title, student and faculty names and their contact information (emails and phone numbers)
  • Narrative – Not to exceed three pages. The narrative should address the following:
      • Describe the research or work you intend to pursue as part of this internship.
      • Describe the materials, methods and/or types of representation you intend to use for the exploration.
      • Identify the goals and objectives for the project. What do you hope to achieve?
      • Description of what you anticipate will be the final deliverable(s)
      • Project Timeline (including deadlines and evaluation)
      • Proposed budget for materials, etc.
      • Name(s) of the potential JHU faculty/researcher with whom you will be collaborating. For reference, a list of HEMI faculty can be found here. A list of CAIMEE faculty can be found here.
  • Portfolio of relevant work (include images or link to website)
  • Statement by MICA faculty member acknowledging their willingness to advise the student for the duration of this project/internship.
  • Resume or curriculum vitae of the student
  • Copy of student’s academic transcript
  • Curriculum vitae of the MICA faculty member

Finalists may be invited to meet with HEMI Faculty.

Proposals will be accepted until 5 PM on March 18, 2024. Please email the proposal as a single PDF document to [email protected].
