Shawn, a junior at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, MD, is blind. This didn’t impede him from completing over 200 hours of work with HEMI Fellow Kavan Hazeli Ph.D. for his summer Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP) Research & Engineering Apprenticeship Program.

Combining special kits and braille graphs, Abraham and Hazeli found creative ways to understand fundamental science and engineering principles. Shawn was working in a new field to him, where he “had the idea to study different resin composites to substitute what is currently used in tooth cavity fillings, as the current composite attracts bacteria and therefore requires patients to replace fillings.”

REAP is a summer Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) program that places talented high-school students from groups historically under-represented and underserved in research apprenticeships at U.S. colleges and universities.

‘This experience has exposed me to so many different fields and types of projects in engineering’ – Shawn Abraham

Congratulations to Shawn and his mentor for their truly unique approach to learning!
