Please join us in congratulating HEMI faculty members Prof. Mark Foster, Prof. Vicky Nguyen, and Prof. Tyrel McQueen for being among the thirty-four early-career faculty members selected to receive the Johns Hopkins Catalyst Awards.
The Catalyst Awards program is part of a $15 million university commitment to faculty-led research launched in 2015. Each faculty member was honored with a $75,000 grant to fuel their research and intellectual pursuits. According to JHU President Ronald J. Daniels, “Funding can be a significant challenge for faculty in the early years. The Catalyst Awards are a show of support for their intellect and creativity and an investment in the ideas and discoveries they will bring to light.”
The 2016-2017 Catalyst cohort is a diverse group of creative thinkers. Dr. Mark Foster is an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering interested in studying ultrafast phenomena and measurement, including nonlinear dynamics. His research aims to innovate in the development of optical systems for ultrahigh-speed signal processing.
Dr. Vicky Nguyen is an associate professor from the Department of Mechanical Engineering working on biomechanics, constitutive modeling, and fracture mechanics. She is specifically interested in the mechanical behavior, growth, and remodeling of fibrous soft tissues as well as the failure of rate dependent materials.
Dr. Tyrel McQueen, on the other hand, is an associate professor within the Department of Chemistry that also holds dual appointments in the Department of Physics and Astronomy and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. His lab designs new materials with favorable physical properties to closely study the structure-function relationships in these new compounds.
