Professor Lori Graham-Brady, Associate Director of HEMI and Chair of the Department of Civil Engineering was a featured plenary speaker at the 2017 Engineering Mechanics Institute (EMI) Conference, an Institute within the American Society of Civil Engineers. The conference was held in San Diego, California and marked the 10th anniversary EMI.
The title of the plenary lecture was, “Uncertainty in the context of materials by design: key roles for stochastic mechanics”. In the lecture, Lori discusses the vision that for the development of new structural materials, models, experiments, characterization, and processing would come together to enable rapid design of new materials with unprecedented capabilities. Closure of this so-called materials-by-design loop would require closing communication gaps that exist between the various participants in the process. Her lecture included challenges and opportunities for stochastic mechanics community. A complete abstract of her plenary lecture is available at: http://jacobsschool.ucsd.edu/emi2017/speakers.shtml
