RESEARCH STRATEGY
Our research strategy is simple: See it, understand it, and control it, where “it” refers either to a fundamental mechanism or a broader aspect of materials behavior. This theme leverages our cross-cutting research initiatives (CCRI) and spans all research areas (RAs) and focus areas (FAs).
RESEARCH ACTIVITIES
Currently, the MSEE URA program examines four main research areas: (1) Material Properties and Failure, (2) Materials and Manufacturing for Synergistic Effects, (3) Chemistry in Extreme Environments, and (4) Photon-Material Interactions. There are also Cross Cutting Research Initiatives (CCRI) that span multiple research areas.
Within each research area, there are two or three focus areas as shown below.
Research Area 1: Material Properties and Failure
- Focus Area 1: Materials Properties for Reducing Uncertainty
- Focus Area 2: Materials Constitutive Models
- Focus Area 3: Materials Properties of Energetic Materials (EM) and Additively Manufactured Energetics Materials (AMEM) currently delayed
Research Area 2: Materials and Manufacturing for Synergistic Effects
- Focus Area 1: Multimodal Shielding currently delayed
- Focus Area 2: Tailoring Chemistry via Materials
- Focus Area 3: Characterize and Predict Physical/Chemical Effects in Turbulent Environments currently delayed
Research Area 3: Chemistry in Extreme Environments
- Focus Area 1: Nuclear Fireball Plasma Chemistry
- Focus Area 2: High Temperature Properties and Chemistry of Agents and Simulants
Research Area 4: Photon-Material Interactions
- Focus Area 1: X-ray Induced Blow-off and Plasma
- Focus Area 2: Direct Laser Impulse
