Research Area 1: Material Properties and Failure

Research Area 1 of the Materials Science in Extreme Environments University Research Alliance (MSEE URA) focuses on Material Properties and Failure.

In Research Area 1, the MSEE URA will quantify materials properties and failure and their associated uncertainties in conditions relevant to weapons of mass destruction (WMD) attacks using advanced experiments and models.

This research is supported by the focus areas outlined below.

Develop and validate constitutive models for the deformation, flow, and thermal response of geomaterials subjected to dynamic compression and penetration. This effort includes identifying canonical materials and constitutive models, developing and employing advanced in situ diagnostics, applying UQ to update materials and models, and demonstrating a constitutive model prediction/validation loop.
