Research Area 4 – Focus Area 1: X-ray Induced Blow-off and Plasma

Goal: Predict and understand the interaction of high-intensity X-rays originating from a nuclear blast under exo-atmospheric conditions with the exposed surfaces of materials in optics, sensors, and solar arrays in DoD systems.

Long-term Strategy: Develop high-fidelity physics models validated by the state-of-the-art experiments and their applications to predict and possibly mitigate X-ray induced blow-off, shock, and plasma generation.
