THIS JOB IS LOCATED AT EGLIN, AFB. This position entails working with scientists and engineers in the research and development of metal additive manufacturing (AM) technologies, to include surveying and evaluating existing technologies, formulating solutions to increase the manufacturing readiness level (MRL) of technologies, identifying/establishing/coordinating with research partners within academia, industry, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Department of Energy (DOE), advancing state-of-the-art technologies for large-format metal AM, and characterization of metal AM parts. The employee will communicate with metal AM equipment manufacturers and users to identify suitable large-format technologies for ordnance applications and assist in planning, research, and development of emerging technologies. The employee will help coordinate research efforts among other DoD (Army, Navy, Air Force) and DOE (Oak Ridge, Sandia, Lawrence Livermore) laboratories to identify technology gaps and limitations, synchronize the transition of metal AM processes and materials, and increase the MRL and build volumes of large-format technologies. This would require participation in technical interchange meetings, community of practice meetings, workshops, and technical conferences. The employee will assist in laboratory characterization of metallic materials and composites by coordinating with technicians, engineers, and researchers to setup, test, and analyze data. Characterization testing will include chemical/elemental (e.g. spectroscopy), mechanical (e.g. tension, fracture toughness, high-strain rate), and microscopic (e.g. optical & scanning electron) analysis. The individual may assist in presenting technical and non-technical information to small and large audiences. The individual may be required to travel, estimated at about 2-5 trips per year.
